POSTNET™ Barcode Certification

The POSTNET Barcode Certification program evaluates and certifies manufacturers' printers, computer software, and systems (micro, mini, or mainframe) that produce a POSTNET barcode by verifying that the POSTNET barcode produced meets all dimensional specifications required by United States Postal Service® barcode reader equipment. Once the equipment is certified, it is certified indefinitely.

Dimensional specifications include height, width, pitch, tilt, and offset, as defined in Chapter 4 of Publication 25, Designing Letter and Reply Mail. This process validates the ability of the equipment or software to produce the POSTNET barcode correctly. The readability of the barcode is a separate issue influenced by factors such as paper, ink, reflectance, and background noise (interference) of the individual mailpiece. Therefore, readability is not included in the certification criteria.

Vendors who successfully complete the process are issued a USPS® POSTNET Barcode Certificate of Quality and are listed, along with the specific certified product, in the POSTNET Barcode Certification Vendors List, which is published periodically. This list is available at ribbs.usps.gov/files/vendors/postnet_vendor.pdf.

The USPS can perform the certification on-site or you may elect to send in your equipment to be certified. There is a one time certification charge which varies depending on the choice of certification.
