The Intelligent Mail^® barcode (formally known as the 4-State Customer Barcode) is the next generation of USPS^® barcode technology used to sort and track letters and flats. Intelligent Mail^® barcode technology, among other things, combines the capabilities of the POSTNET barcode and the Planet Code^® barcode into one unique barcode.

Mailer ID Guidelines
Read how the Mailer ID can be used within the family of Intelligent Mail^® barcodes to identify Mail Owners and/or Mailing Agents. The document presents guidelines for assigning Mailer IDs and defines Mailer IDs as 6 or 9 digits fields assigned by the USPS to each Mail Owner and/or Mailing Agent based upon the selected service and mail volume of the mailer. The USPS provides software support for a total of 18 combinations of language environments (C, Java 2, COBOL, and PL/1) on 7 unique platforms (z/OS, VSE/ESA, OS/400, AIX, Linux/6000, Linux/Intel, and Windows). For printing Intelligent Mail^® barcode in a production environment, a variety of Intelligent Mail^® barcode fonts are available for each of the four major production printing environments: AFP (MVS, AS/400, VM, VSE), HP PCL, PostScript, and Xerox Metacode.
